The Weight of Choice..Part 1

The phone stopped vibrating

But Duane still stood there

On one side of the door was Stacey. On the other side was everything he hadn't figured out yet.

The porch light cast a soft glow across the driveway as he stared at the

screen in his hand.

Her name was gone now.

The call had ended.

Still, his thumb hovered over the phone.

Still, his chest felt tight.

Still, he couldn't move.

For the first time in a long time, Duane wasn't trying to figure out what

somebody else needed from him.

He was trying to figure out what he needed from himself.

And somehow that felt harder.

A lot harder.

His eyes drifted toward the front door.

Stacey was inside.

The woman he loved.

The woman who never asked him to be perfect.

Never asked him to have all the answers.

Never demanded he choose her.

She simply refused to compete with things he should've already let go.

That truth sat heavy.

Because she was right.

The crazy part?

She had always been right.

Duane let out a slow breath.

Then another.

His heart felt restless.

Like it wanted movement.

Space.

Air.

Before he could think himself out of it, he walked back to his car and

climbed inside.

No destination.

No plan.

Just motion.

The city lights blurred past as he drove.

One street turned into another.

Then another.

The radio stayed off.

For once, there was nothing loud enough to drown out his thoughts.

An hour later he looked up and realized exactly where he was.

Home.

Not the house he shared with Stacey.

His first home.

The neighborhood where everything started.

The neighborhood where he still carried pieces of himself he never

came back for.

Duane parked across the street and stared.

The house looked smaller now.

Funny how that happened.

As a kid it had felt enormous.

The center of the universe.

Now it looked like a memory trying to survive.

He leaned back against the seat.

And suddenly he wasn't fifty-something anymore.

He was fourteen.

Running the block with his boys.

Talking trash.

Playing football until the streetlights came on.

Worried about sneakers.

Girls.

Lunch money.

Nothing else.

Life had been simple back then.

Before funerals.

Before marriages.

Before responsibilities became identities.

Before he convinced himself that being needed was the same thing as

being loved.

His father's face surfaced in his memory.

Then the hospital room.

Then the funeral.

Then the years that followed.

The years when everybody seemed to need something.

His mother needed strength.

His siblings needed guidance.

His marriage needed saving.

His children needed stability.

Everybody needed.

Needed.

Needed.

Needed.

And somewhere in all that...

Duane disappeared.

A tear slipped down his cheek before he realized he was crying.

Not because he was weak.

Because he was tired.

Soul tired.

The kind of tired sleep couldn't fix.

His thoughts drifted to his ex-wife.

Not with longing.

Not with regret.

Just honesty.

He had spent years answering calls.

Fixing crises.

Carrying burdens that weren't always his.

Not because anybody forced him to.

Because he didn't know who he was without the weight.

Then Stacey's face appeared in his mind.

And everything softened.

Her laugh.

Her stubbornness.

The way she challenged him without tearing him down.

The way she listened.

The way she saw through him.

The way she loved him.

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

For the first time in years, somebody had shown up for him the same

way he showed up for everybody else.

Partnership. Not dependency.

Love.

Not obligation.

And suddenly a thought hit him so hard he sat forward in the seat.

What if peace wasn't selfish?

What if choosing himself wasn't abandonment?

What if God wasn't asking him to carry everybody?

What if God was teaching him how to finally let go?

The thought settled deep.

Not in his head.

In his spirit.

And for a moment the neighborhood disappeared.

The car disappeared.

The noise disappeared.

All he heard were Stacey's last words.

You have choices.

Duane laughed softly through wet eyes.

Because all this time he thought he didn't.

All this time he thought responsibility was destiny.

All this time he thought love meant sacrifice without limits.

But Stacey had handed him something nobody else ever had.

Permission.

Permission to choose.

Permission to heal.

Permission to stop standing in two places at once.
