Trivia Question❓

Which mineral plays a key role in bone strength, nerve signaling, muscle function, and heart rhythm — yet many women over 50 don’t absorb it as efficiently as they used to?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

When God Knocks on the Relationship

I went to bed with a heaviness I couldn’t shake.

Not because Duane and I disagreed.

Not even because I realized how far apart we really were when it came to church, prayer, and God.

It was heavier than that.

It was the weight of knowing I had let life slide me out of alignment with my own faith.

Somewhere between love, work, heartbreak, and trying to survive… I had backslid. Quietly. Comfortably. Like you don’t even realize you’re drifting until you look up and can’t see the shore anymore.

I didn’t know when it happened.

I just knew it had.

And the part that hurt the most?

I hadn’t invited God into this relationship from the very beginning.

When I woke up the next morning, Duane was already gone.

But the house still smelled like him.

A fresh pot of coffee sat on the counter, cinnamon rolls still warm, fruit neatly sliced on a plate. And right in the middle of it all was a little note in his handwriting:

“Hey babe. Went golfing with the guys. I’ll be back later this afternoon. If you need me, you know how to reach me. Love you.”

I exhaled.

I was grateful to be alone. I needed space. To think. To pray. To be honest with myself. I didn’t know if I should call my mom or my girls… but I knew I needed God’s voice louder than everybody else’s right now.

Because whatever we were about to face next, it wasn’t small.

Duane

Last night stuck to me like humidity.

I didn’t know if I handled it right. Or if I’d just stepped all over the woman I love without even realizing it. So I did what I always do when life starts punching me in the chest…

I called the guys.

Aaron.
Jimbo.
Silas.
Daniel.

My day-ones.

When one of us sends out a 911 call, everybody shows up. No excuses.

The drive to the golf course was quiet and smooth. Frankie Beverly and Maze was riding through the speakers, sunroof cracked open, the air smelling like flowers and fresh starts. But my mind? Loud.

They all pulled up at the same time. Same old synchronized brotherhood. We grabbed our clubs, took a quick shot at the bar — because it was too early to be there but not too early to need it — and played a round.

Aaron won.

As usual.

Which meant we all had to buy his lunch, drinks, and listen to him talk trash like he invented golf.

Afterward, we posted up in the cigar lounge with cognac and leather chairs that made you feel like a boss even if your heart was in pieces.

Daniel leaned back.

“Alright, man. What was the 911 about? Why are we here today?”

Silas laughed. “Yeah, it better be good. I was planning on being lazy in my draws watching football.”

Jimbo shot back, “Man shut up. Nobody wants to hear about your funky draws.”

Everybody laughed.

Then I told them.

About Stacey.

About the pastor cousin.

About the counseling.

About the God conversation.

The room went quiet.

Aaron finally spoke. “That’s heavy. Faith is personal. Can’t nobody force that on anybody.”

Daniel nodded. “True. But I’ll say this — without God at the center of my marriage, me and Tiffany wouldn’t have made it. Period. God is the anchor. The compass. The glue when everything else wants to fall apart.”

I chuckled. “Preach, Pastor Daniel.”

He smirked. “Nah, for real. When I was young, rich, famous, and wild… it was her prayers that kept me from losing everything. Proverbs 31:30 says charm is deceptive and beauty fades, but a woman who fears the

Lord? That’s the real treasure.”

Jimbo leaned forward. “So what’s really wrong with counseling?”

Aaron added, “Yeah, what you scared of, bro?”

Jimbo sighed. “I wish Leslie and I had done it before we got married. I wish we had prayed together. Now all I got left are memories and regret. And let me tell you something — at our age, it’s either thirsty gold diggers or bitter divorcees. Pick your poison.”

That one hit me.

I stared into my glass. “Maybe I’m afraid old skeletons will come out. Or I’ll hear something I don’t want to hear. Or worse… we’ll find out we’re just two grown people afraid to be alone.”

Daniel shook his head. “You don’t believe that. I’ve seen you two. That woman loves you.”

“And didn’t y’all already do counseling early on?” he added.

“Yeah. That’s why I didn’t think we needed it again,” I said. “And this church stuff… I didn’t grow up that way. I didn’t even pray over my food until Stacey.”

Daniel laughed. “Heathen.”

Aaron chimed in, “You going straight to hell.”

We cracked up — but Jimbo wasn’t laughing.

“You were wrong,” he said. “You made her feel small when she was being vulnerable. So I’ll ask you again… do you want what Daniel has? Or what I lost?”

That silence said everything.

We clinked glasses.

“To thirsty gold diggers and bitter divorcees,” somebody joked.

But I wasn’t laughing anymore.

Because I already knew the truth.

If praying, counseling, and opening my heart was what it took to keep my woman…

Then that’s what I was about to do.

I just had one more thing left to do now.

Go talk to my baby.

And I had no idea what she was about to say when I walked through that door.
