The Cost of Being Loved - Part 1
And the way he said it— low… careful… like it had edges — made Stacey’s breath slow.
This was it.
The deeper layer.
Duane’s jaw tightened slightly before he spoke again.
“I don’t just fear losing you,” he said.
“I fear becoming somebody I don’t recognize trying to keep you.”
Silence.
Heavy now.
Stacey’s fingers pressed lightly into the blanket.
Duane continued, slower now… choosing every word.
“In my marriage… I kept adjusting… bending… giving… trying to make it work.”
He shook his head faintly.
“And by the time it was over…”
A pause.
“I didn’t even recognize who I was anymore.”
There it was.
The real wound.
Not the breakup.
The loss of self.
“So now,” he said quietly, “even when something feels right…”
He swallowed.
“…I don’t trust what it might turn me into if I go all the way in.”
Stacey closed her eyes briefly.
Not in pain.
In understanding.
Duane finally turned around.
Fully this time.
His eyes met hers.
Open.
Unprotected.
“And you…”
He paused.
Softened just slightly.
“You make me want to go all the way in.”
That truth sat between them.
Warm.
And dangerous.
Stacey didn’t speak right away.
Didn’t rush to reassure him.
Because this moment?
This wasn’t about fixing him.
This was about hearing him clearly.
“What does ‘all the way in’ look like to you?” she asked softly. Duane held her gaze.
Then looked down for a second.
Thinking.
“Letting my guard down,” he said.
“Not holding parts of myself back.”
A pause.
“Trusting that what I’m building with you… won’t cost me who I am.”
His voice dropped.
“Or break me if it don’t work.”
That last part— barely above a whisper— was the one that mattered most.
Stacey felt it.
Not just what he said— but what he was asking without asking.
She reached for his hand.
Slow.
Intentional. He let her.
Their fingers laced again.
But this time—
it felt different.
More aware.
More… chosen.
“I hear you,” she said quietly.
And she meant that.
Duane studied her face.
Looking for more.
Waiting for more.
But she didn’t give it.
Not yet.
Because she understood something now.
Something he might not even realize yet—
He wasn’t just opening up…
He was asking:
“Can you love me without changing me?”
And that wasn’t a question she could answer lightly.
Stacey’s thumb moved gently across his hand.
“I’m not here to take anything from you,” she said softly.
A pause.
“But I’m also not here to love you halfway either.”
That landed.
Different.
Duane’s eyes flickered slightly.
Something shifted.
Not discomfort
Not relief.
Something in between.
“Yeah…” he murmured.
Like he felt the weight of that.
Silence settled again.
But this time—
it wasn’t just emotional.
It was… defining.
Because now—
this wasn’t just about his fear.
It was about what she required too.
And neither of them rushed past that.
The morning light stretched further into the room.
The world outside continued like nothing had changed.
But inside — everything had.
Duane looked at her one more time.
Really looked.
Like he was seeing her not just as someone who loved him… but as someone who had her own line too.
And for the first time — he didn’t try to speak over the moment.
Didn’t try to explain it away.
He just sat there…
holding her hand…
feeling everything he just said—
and everything she didn’t.
Because what she didn’t say?
That was the part he was going to have to figure out.
And something told him—
that answer…wasn’t going to be easy.
