Trivia Question❓

Which iconic actress became the oldest woman EVER to star in a #1 box office film at age 80?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

The Invitation She Misread

Without a word about what just happened, Duane lifted his glass. I lifted mine. We tapped them gently and finished our toast, pretending like Crystal popping up at lunch hadn’t sucked all the oxygen out the room for a good five minutes.

We ordered appetizers, our entrées, and forced ourselves to enjoy the view, the food, and each other. There was a thickness in the air — the kind you taste before you feel — but neither one of us spoke on it.

Today was supposed to be about us, and we were determined to keep it that way.

The Ride Home

On the way home, he held my hand while smooth jazz floated through the car. No talking. No processing. Just silence and intertwined fingers.

Once we got back to the house, Duane headed straight to the man cave, and I went upstairs to our bedroom. I needed to call my girls immediately — because if anybody deserved this tea? It was them.

I called Chanel first, then we three-wayed Antonette.

As soon as they answered, I put on my dramatic voice:

“GIRL. Girl. GIRL — get ready. I got tea.”

Chanel groaned.
“Already? Dang, wasn’t last night enough?”

Antonette jumped in.
“Please don’t tell me you called that woman and dragged her down the street!”

We all hollered laughing.

“No,” I said. “I am in my fifties now. I don’t drag people down the street. I just give them a piece of my mind…”

I paused. “And a two-piece if needed.”

That started another round of laughter.

Chanel said, “Hold up, let me pour a glass of wine. I was gonna watch my show, but THIS sounds better.”

I agreed. I poured my own glass — actually, I took the whole bottle with me. As I walked toward the bedroom, I heard voices coming from the man cave. Duane’s boys had stopped by. Good. He needed to vent too. And we definitely couldn’t vent to each other — not yet.

Girl Talk + Wedding Talk + Foolishness

I told the girls everything — the dresses, how fine Duane looked in that suit, the perfect lunch spot… and then the Crystal episode. By the time I finished, they were just as irritated as I was.

Antonette sighed dramatically.

“Okay, she’s gone too far. I thought the memo I gave her in the car last night would’ve done the job.”

Chanel said, “Oh, she GOT the memo — she just didn’t read it right. She’s on a mission. And nothing you said fazed her. We are grown women. We are HALF A CENTURY. And she’s out here acting like a hurt 20-year-old. She needs to check herself.”

“Before she wrecks herself,” I added.

We burst out laughing.

Then Antonette got quiet.
“Stace… I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have brought her. I feel like this is all my fault.”

“Girl, STOP,” I said firmly. “This is not on you. This was brewing long before we ever met. It was gonna show its ugly face eventually. Honestly? I’m glad it’s happening now. Duane and I will nip this in the bud before the wedding.”

That lightened everything again. We went back to talking about my dress and bachelorette ideas.

Antonette, trying to be funny, said, “Soooo… can I bring a plus one?”

I almost choked on my wine.

Chanel cut in quick: “Girl BYE. Bring a plus one if you want — both y’all will get dragged.”

More laughter.

Later That Evening…

Duane and I ended the night on the patio with the fireplace lit, wrapped in blankets, letting the flames quiet our thoughts. I snuggled under his arm while he inhaled deeply.

“Baby,” he said softly, “I’m so sorry. About last night… and today. You don’t deserve any of this. I created that mess, and you shouldn’t have to be dragged into it.”

“It’s okay, babe,” I said. “It’s not your fault your crazy ex finally found you after you ghosted her.”

He chuckled. I did too — barely.

“But I do have one question,” I said. “Why didn’t you tell me about her earlier?”

He tilted his head.

“I kind of did. Remember that night we were drinking and talking about our pasts? I said I’d had some good ones, some bad ones, some users… and then I said ‘I dodged a bullet right on time.’”

I blinked.
“Wait… THAT bullet?”

He nodded slowly.

Well damn.

After a long pause, I said what needed saying.

“I got her number from Antonette. I think you should call her. End this properly so we can move on.”

Duane exhaled and shook his head.

“I talked to the fellas… and honestly? I’m a grown-ass man in my fifties. I don’t owe an ex ANY explanations. I’ve moved on. Life is good. I’m good.”

He kissed my forehead.

And trust me, I got it. Fully. But I also knew women. Especially wounded ones.

“Babe,” I said, “she is NOT in the same emotional space. She has something to say. And she’s not going away quietly. I’m not saying you owe her closure — but I AM saying we need to address the elephant in the room so his big behind can leave.”

I paused.

“Plus… she already knows where we live. And clearly, she’s not far. Antonette picked her up easily. And we ran into her at the gallery. We’re bound to cross paths again. I’d rather the air be clear when it happens.”

He nodded“Understandable. I’ll do it for you.”

I handed him the number.

The Call

Crystal answered on the second ring.

“Hello?”

“Hey Crystal, it’s Duane.”

Her voice brightened instantly.

“Oh! Duane… it’s good to hear your voice.”

My head jerked so fast I almost strained something. I knew THAT tone. That “I know you miss me” tone. That “I’m still hoping” tone.

Duane didn’t bite.

“Yeah, okay. Look, yesterday was unexpected. Today too. I think we need to clear the air so we can both move on.”

“I would love that,” she purred. “I’ve wanted to talk to you ever since the day you ghosted me. My heart was broken. I haven’t loved anyone the same since you.”

I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly got stuck.

Duane ignored it.

“Let’s meet for coffee Saturday morning. Hash it out, then move forward separately.”

“I’d love that,” she said.

“Cool. See you then.” He hung up.

CUT TO: Crystal’s House

“Yes. YES!” she squealed to herself. “My man is coming to see me!”

She ran to her closet, pulling dresses off hangers.

“Sexy? Casual? Should I play it down? It’s just coffee… but who cares? I’m seeing my man. I WILL win him back.”

Back to Us…

I looked Duane dead in his face.

“So you know… we are going.”

He smirked.

“I had no doubt.”

“I think she’s delusional,” I said. “Her voice alone told me she thinks this is her chance.”

He shook his head.

“Nahhh, babe. How though? She was at our meet-and-greet. She saw the ring. She saw I gave her ZERO energy at the gallery.”

“Baby,” I said, touching his arm gently, “women create whole fantasies off a glance. And she’s been holding onto this for YEARS. Trust me… she thinks this is an opening.”

He stared at me, concern slowly replacing disbelief.

“Just watch,” I said quietly. “You’ll see.”

🥗 HOLIDAY SALAD — Festive Cranberry, Roasted Pear & Farro Glow Bowl

A warm, cozy, elegant dish that’s light enough for the season but rich with holiday flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pear, sliced and roasted

  • ½ cup cooked farro

  • 3 cups baby spinach or winter greens

  • ¼ cup fresh cranberries (or dried, rehydrated)

  • 2 tbsp toasted pistachios

  • 2 tbsp vegan feta or goat cheese (optional)

  • Pinch of cinnamon

Honey‑Cider Dressing

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt & pepper

Instructions

  1. Roast pear slices at 400°F for 12–14 min with a drizzle of oil and cinnamon.

  2. In a bowl, layer greens → warm farro → roasted pears → cranberries.

  3. Add pistachios and optional cheese.

  4. Drizzle with dressing and enjoy warm or room temp.

Why It’s Perfect:
It celebrates holiday colors, balances sweet + tart + earthy, and fuels energy for winter with just the right amount of comfort.

The holiday season is a time of celebration, but in California, it often results in a noticeable spike in household waste.

Statewide efforts are encouraging families to reduce waste and embrace greener habits as they gather.

Planning meals carefully helps avoid extra food waste; use what's already in your pantry, buy only what's needed, and freeze leftovers when possible.

Composting is another smart change — save fruit and veggie scraps for the green bin instead of sending them to landfills.

Switch to reusable plates, cups, and utensils, and consider decorations that can be recycled or composted for an eco-conscious celebration.

When choosing gifts, opt for experiences or items from local shops, and use fabric or recyclable paper for wrapping.

Properly sort recyclables like beverage containers or donate gently used items, helping to keep local landfills lighter this festive season.

Joke Of The Day

Why did the woman over 50 refuse to argue anymore?
Because she finally reached the age where peace looks better on her than proving a point.

On December 3, 1992, engineer Neil Papworth sent a simple 'Merry Christmas' text to a colleague at Vodafone.

This humble message marked the birth of SMS, quietly sparking a revolution in digital communication.

By allowing messages to travel instantly, SMS changed how people connect, eliminating the need for calls or letters.

Over time, this technology evolved into the modern messaging apps, group chats, and emoji-laden exchanges we use daily.

Locally, SMS powers quick updates from schools, urgent city alerts, and neighborhood coordination, making information sharing effortless and immediate.

From business promotions to family check-ins, texting has woven itself into the fabric of community life.

That first modest greeting now stands as proof that small innovations can reshape how we interact, keeping our neighborhoods connected and responsive.
