The Quiet Shift - Part 2

The air outside was crisp.

Morning had burned off the edge of the night, leaving behind something clean.

Something steady.

They sat side by side, not too close—

but not distant either.

Just enough space for everything that had been said…

and everything that hadn’t.

The trees stood tall around them, unmoved.

The sky stretched open, wide and patient.

Stacey rested her forearms on the railing, looking out.

Duane sat back slightly, one arm draped over his knee, coffee resting in his hand.

Quiet again.

But this quiet?

It wasn’t empty.

It was full of what they now knew.

Stacey exhaled slowly.

Not heavy.

Just… intentional.

“What does it look like for you…” she asked gently,

“…to figure this out?”

She didn’t turn to him.

Didn’t need to.

The question landed between them, open.

Duane didn’t answer right away.

He looked out at the trees, jaw tightening just slightly.

Thinking.

Not avoiding.

Just… choosing his words.

“I don’t know yet,” he said finally.

Honest.

Unpolished.

“But I know I can’t pretend no more.”

The words sat there.

Simple.

But solid.

Stacey felt that.

Because that wasn’t just about faith.

That was about everything.

No performing.

No saying what sounds right.

No becoming who he thinks she needs.

Just… truth.

She nodded once.

Slow.

“I respect that,” she said quietly.

And she meant it.

Duane glanced at her then.

Something in his expression shifted.

Not relief.

Not tension.

Just… recognition.

Like he realized—

she wasn’t asking for perfection.

But she also wasn’t accepting half-truths.

He took another sip of his coffee, then set the mug down on the railing.

“I been doing that for a long time,” he admitted.

“Pretending?”

He nodded.

“Yeah.”

A small pause.

“Not lying… but… adjusting.”

Stacey’s eyes stayed forward.

Listening.

“Trying to meet people where they are,” he continued.

“Be what they need.”

His voice dropped just a little.

“Even if that ain’t really where I’m at.”

There it was again.

That pattern.

That survival.

Stacey turned her head slightly now, looking at him.

“And where are you at?” she asked.

Soft.

But direct.

Duane let out a slow breath.

“I’m at the point where I don’t want to lose myself again,” he said.

No hesitation this time.

Just truth.

Stacey held his gaze for a second longer…

then looked back out at the mountains.

Because she felt something too.

Something she hadn’t said out loud yet.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the railing.

“I can’t carry that for you,” she said quietly.

Not harsh.

Not cold.

Just… clear.

Duane didn’t react immediately.

But he heard it.

She continued.

“I can walk with you,” she said.

“I can be here with you.”

A pause.

“But I can’t figure it out for you.”

The words didn’t push him away.

They grounded the moment.

Duane nodded slowly.

“Yeah,” he said.

“I know.”

And for the first time—

it didn’t sound like defense.

It sounded like… acceptance.

They sat there a while longer.

Not trying to solve anything.

Not trying to force clarity.

Just… sitting in what was true.

Packing didn’t take long.

The cabin slowly returned to what it had been before they arrived—

just a space.

Not a container.

Not a sanctuary.

Just… wood and walls and quiet.

Duane carried the bags out to the car.

Stacey did a final walk-through, eyes scanning the room.

Not looking for anything left behind.

Just… feeling it one last time.

When she stepped outside, Duane was already leaning against the car,

keys in his hand.

Waiting.

But not impatient.

He looked at her.

And she looked at him.

No smiles.

No forced lightness.

Just… understanding.

They got in.

This time—

he didn’t ask where they were going.

And she didn’t say anything about the drive.

The car pulled away from the cabin, gravel crunching beneath the tires.

The trees passed them slowly.

Then quicker.

Then gone.

The mountain didn’t hold them this time.

It just… let them go.

Inside the car, the music played low.

Same smooth rhythm.

Same familiar sound.

But it didn’t feel the same.

Because they weren’t.

Stacey glanced over at him once.

Duane was looking out the window, thoughtful.

Present.

Not distant.

Just… processing.

And for once—

she didn’t try to read ahead.

Didn’t try to figure out where this was going.

She just sat with what was.

Because that was enough.

For now.

They didn’t leave the mountain with answers…

but they didn’t leave the same either.
