When Silence Speaks Louder Than Love

As we pulled into the driveway, fear hit me like a wave I couldn’t swim through. I just sat there—frozen, heavy, like a brick cemented in place. My hands rested on my lap, but my mind was everywhere. I wasn’t ready to face what waited behind that front door. I wasn’t ready for the silence, the disappointment, or whatever version of Duane I was about to meet.

I had no idea what this conversation was going to sound like—or if there’d even be one. All I knew was I had hurt the man I loved, and the weight of that truth sat on my chest like a ton of bricks. I was mad at myself—for shutting him out, for still moving like I was single, always trying to fix everything on my own. I wanted to say I was sorry a thousand times, but I knew no apology could rewind the clock or soften the sting.

Duane came around to my side of the car like he always did. He opened the door and reached for my hand, but this time it felt... different. No smile. No slick comment. No warmth in his touch. Just duty—cold, distant, mechanical. The man who used to look at me like I was his peace now looked through me like I was the problem.

Inside, the house looked the same—but it didn’t feel the same. The walls that usually held laughter now echoed with tension. The candles and cozy throws that used to make me feel safe suddenly felt staged, like props in a home that no longer belonged to us.

Duane went straight to the kitchen, grabbed a beer, and turned on a game. No words. No glance. Just... noise.

I went to the bedroom, kicked off my heels, and slid into my fuzzy slippers, trying to find comfort in something familiar. Then I made a cup of tea—my go-to when I needed to think, to breathe, to process.

As the kettle whistled, I replayed everything in my head. I wished I had never gone to that meeting. Wished Duane hadn’t had to sit there hearing things he should’ve heard from me first. I wished I had been woman enough to be upfront, to trust him like he’s always asked me to. He told me more than once, “We’re supposed to lean on each other. Be real. Be open.” But I still tried to do it all my way.

Now I was standing in the ruins of my own decisions. When my tea was ready, I decided to face him—to try and talk. But when I stepped into the living room, the TV was off. The couch was empty. My stomach dropped.

I looked out the window—and his car was gone. Just like that.

A single tear slid down my cheek as I stood there in the silence he left behind. My heart felt like it was splitting open. Duane never left the house without saying something—anything. The fact that he did tonight told me everything I didn’t want to hear.

I sat down, sipped my tea, and tried to pull myself together. Then I did what I always do when life gets too heavy—I called my girls.

When I texted “911, I need y’all,” they didn’t ask questions. They just said, “Where we meeting?” We ended up at our usual spot—dim lights, strong drinks, and music low enough for real talk. As soon as we sat down, I spilled everything. Every detail. Every regret.

When I finished, silence hung over the table. Chanel reached across and grabbed my hand, whispering a prayer over me and Duane. I closed my eyes, holding onto her words like air. But the moment the “amen” hit, Antonette jumped in—straight no chaser. She gave it to me raw. I didn’t want to hear it, but I couldn’t be mad—she was coming from love.

While she talked, I glanced across the room—and my whole world froze.

Duane.

He was sitting at a table in the far corner with his boys, laughing, drinks in hand like everything was all good. My heart started racing. I couldn’t help but wonder—had he told them what happened? Did they know about Darius? Were they clowning me or comforting him? Were they

pushing him to walk away or telling him to work it out?

A thousand thoughts spun through my head.

Then, like the universe wanted to test me, he looked up—and our eyes locked. For a split second, the laughter died on his lips. The light in his eyes dimmed. He saw me. I know he did.

But instead of coming over... he looked away.

Just turned his head like I wasn’t even there.

That one move broke me more than any argument ever could.

I sat there, fighting my tears, trying to keep my face strong while my insides crumbled. My girls  didn’t notice him, and I didn’t say a word. I just swallowed that lump in my throat and kept sipping my drink like everything was fine.

But inside, my heart whispered the same question on repeat—

What did I do... and can this be fixed?

🥗“Crimson Harvest Salad with Roasted Grapes & Hazelnut Crunch”

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups baby spinach

  • 1 cup shredded radicchio

  • 1 cup seedless red grapes

  • ½ cup roasted beets, cubed

  • Âź cup crumbled feta or chèvre

  • 2 tbsp chopped toasted hazelnuts

  • 1 tbsp pomegranate arils (optional for sparkle)

  • Olive oil spray

  • Sea salt & cracked black pepper

Dressing: Honey-Balsamic Thyme Vinaigrette

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 tsp honey

  • Âź tsp fresh thyme leaves

  • Tiny pinch of cinnamon (the secret warm note)

Instructions:

  1. Roast the grapes: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread grapes on a parchment-lined tray, spray lightly with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 10 minutes, until skins blister slightly and they become jammy and sweet.

  2. In a bowl, whisk all dressing ingredients until smooth and glossy.

  3. Toss spinach, radicchio, roasted beets, and roasted grapes.

  4. Drizzle the vinaigrette, then top with feta, hazelnuts, and pomegranate arils.

  5. Finish with a light grind of pepper and a pinch of sea salt flakes.

Why It Works:

This salad celebrates the deep colors and cozy flavors of fall — roasted grapes bring a subtle caramel sweetness, while hazelnuts add earthy crunch. Radicchio balances it with a gentle bitterness, and thyme ties it all together with an aromatic warmth.

It’s autumn sophistication — in a bowl. 🍇✨
